Film: “Pariah Reveals Another of Being Black in the U.S.”

Filed under: Article — Tags: — V. Shayne Frederick, Editor @ 12:19 pm

NYTIMES: (Nelson George)

EARLY in Dee Rees’s film “Pariah” it journeys into a Brooklyn strip club where scantily clad young black women gyrate to a sexy, foul-mouthed rap song. Lascivious customers leer, toss money and revel in their own unbridled lust. It is a scene that could have been in any of “the hood movies” that once proliferated or even a Tyler Perry melodrama in which Christian values would be affirmed after this bit of titillation.

But in “Pariah” the gaze of desire doesn’t emanate from predatory males but A.G.’s, that is aggressive lesbians, who, in a safe space where they enjoy the fellowship of peers, can be true to themselves.

ABOUT THE FILM In Alrick Brown’s Sundance Award winning debut feature,  A young Tutsi woman and a young Hutu man fall in love amidst chaos, a soldier struggles to foster a greater good while being absent from her family, an Imam saves countless lives and a priest grapples with his faith in the face of unspeakable horror.  Six intimate stories are interwoven to illustrate both tragedy and triumph.   During the 1994 Rwandan genocide, the Mufti of Rwanda, the most respected Muslim leader in the country, issued a fatwa forbidding Muslims from participating in the killing of the Tutsi. As the country became a slaughterhouse, mosques became places of refuge where Muslims and Christians, Hutus and Tutsis came together to protect each other. KINYARWANDA is based on true accounts from survivors who took refuge at the Grand Mosque of Kigali and the Imams who opened their doors to give refuge to the Tutsi and to those Hutu who refused to participate in the killing. Told from the perspective of six characters, we follow the young lovers, the child, the couple, the soldiers, the Imam, and the priest as they are swept up by the chaos of the world around them.   ALRICK BROWN BIO Alrick Brown has a MFA from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. A filmmaker and teacher, he has found his calling writing, directing and producing narrative films and documentaries often focusing on social issues affecting the world at large. For over two years he served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Cote d’Ivoire. The interactions with the people of his village and his overall experiences in West Africa have informed his creative expression; an expression first fostered by his birth in Kingston, Jamaica and migration to, and upbringing in Plainfield, New Jersey. A fluent French speaker, he graduated from Rutgers University with a BA in English and a Masters in Education. Since then he has devoted his energy to changing the world by giving a voice to the voiceless and telling stories that otherwise would not be told.   Alrick’s collective work has screened in over forty film festivals, national and international, and received numerous awards. He and his Co-roducer, received the HBO Life Through Your Lens Emerging Filmmaker Award to produce their critically acclaimed documentary DEATH OF TWO SONS. In 2004 he was one of four NYU students featured in the IFC Documentary series Film School, produced by Academy award nominee Nannette Burstein. In 2007 he addressed the Motion Picture Association of America on C-SPAN. KINYARWANDA marks Brown’s feature film directorial debut.   TOMMY OLIVER BIO Tommy Oliver is trying to make the world a better place, one film at a time.  Growing up in inner city Philadelphia, he quickly learned that “preaching at” his peers was not the way to go and that film was a much better medium to reach them.  Over the next fifteen years, he honed his craft through practice, training, education and experimentation.    As a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University, where he double-majored in Economics and Digital Media, and as a Microsoft alum, he developed a keen understanding for business as a whole. As a cinematographer and certified techie, he developed the technical skills to fill in any crew position and to be able to better communicate with team leaders and vendors. As a producer and writer, he’s faced innumerable challenges from crafting a coherent and marketable story to tackling the logistics of shooting in a foreign country and beyond. This combination of skills allows for outside the box thinking, creative problem solving and better communication.

‘The Black Power Mixtape’, Coming to a Theater Near You

A Swedish documentary team visited the United States from the late 1960s to the mid-1970s to capture the human face of a revolution as it happened. After airing once on Swedish TV, their work was buried and forgotten – until now.

“The Black Power Mixtape, 1967-1975″ offers a fresh look at the movement that upended the civil rights establishment and changed the course of American and African-American history. Documentary filmmaker Goran Hugo Olsson has put together a revelatory film that combines the original footage they shot with fresh perspectives from participants, including Angela Davis and Kathleen Cleaver (Eldridge’s wife), and members of later generations whose own views and work were influenced by the Black Power Movement, such as Erykah Badu and Amir Questlove Thompson.

The film is now playing in New York at the IFC Center and Lincoln Plaza Cinemas. Starting Sept. 23, the film will open in other major cities:

Sept. 23: Berkeley, Calif., Shattuck Cinemas; Los Angeles, Nuart Theatre; San Francisco, Lumiere Theatre

Sept. 30: Boston, Kendall Square Cinema (Cambridge); Washington, E Street Cinema

Oct. 14: Atlanta, Midtown Art Theatre; Chicago, Music Box Theatre; Detroit, Main Art Theatre; Philadelphia, Ritz at the Bourse

Oct. 28: St. Louis, Tivoli Theatre

The film will also be available on Video On Demand nationwide starting Sept. 21. Check with your local cable system for availability.

The Black Power Mixtape: 1967-1975 mobilizes a treasure trove of 16mm material shot by
Swedish journalists who came to the US drawn by stories of urban unrest and revolution.

Bobby Seale, Angela Davis and Eldridge Cleaver among them—the filmmakers captured them

and co-producer Danny Glover bring this footage to light in a mosaic of images, music and
narration chronicling the evolution one of our nation’s most indelible turning points, the Black

The Maids’ Now Have Their Say

By MANOHLA DARGIS
Published: August 9, 2011

There’s a scene in “The Help,” the new movie based on Kathryn Stockett’s novel, that cracks open the early-’60s world of strained smiles and gentility that rarely leaps out of this big, ole slab of honey-glazed hokum. It’s after hours, and Aibileen, a maid played with determined grace by Viola Davis, is going home. Suddenly the bus stops, and a white man orders the black passengers off, explaining that a black man has been shot — except that he doesn’t say black, Negro or colored. In a pool of dreadful night, Aibileen and a young man trade goodbyes and rush off. And then this sturdy, frightened woman starts running as if her life were in danger, because it’s Mississippi, and it is…

Black Lesbian Movie Earns Sundance Acclaim.

A few weeks back, we told you about Pariah: The Movie‘s Kickstarter campaign, the film’s effort to get the money they needed to wrap up music clearances and sound mixing as well as to send the cast & crew to Sundance for its big premiere.

They met their goal, and made it to Sundance — and on opening night, January 20th, 2011, they earned the festival’s first standing ovation. WHO: Filmmaker Robert X. Golphin and members of his all-local cast

WHAT: The premiere of Golphin’s new film, “Punch Me”

WHEN: Wednesday, April 13, 2011, 6:30 p.m.

WHERE: William Way Community Center, 1315 Spruce Street

Robert X. Golphin’s award-winning new film “Punch Me” is a study in struggle and conflict – the story of a young man who struggles to cope with his father’s severe illness while being so conflicted over his own sexuality that he does himself physical harm. Inspired by friends and relatives he has witnessed going through similar struggles, “Punch Me” both addresses the ongoing crisis of HIV infection among African-Americans and delivers the message that everyone, no matter who they are, deserves to be loved.

The screening is sponsored by Bebashi: Transition to Hope, which recognized Golphin’s talents early on with an award for his very first film, “Stricken: Teens Face AIDS.” Golphin, who plays the lead role in the film, and the rest of the film’s cast will be present at the premiere and participate in a panel discussion led by Christopher Hayes following the screening.
