On Monday September 21, 2009, a symposium on reducing racial dis-proportionality in the child welfare system was held at Baruch College in New York City. This symposium highlighted the work of the People’s Institute for Survival and Beyond (www.PISAB.org ) Undoing Racism™ Workshop. Commissioners and Public Officials from Texas and Kentucky presented data that showed significant reductions (36% to 31%) over the course of 5 years in the placement of African American children in the foster care system in their states. In Texas where African Americans across the state only represented 9% of the population, this was clearly a victory. They attributed this paradigmatic shift in practice and the shaping of attitudes among senior level officials and child welfare workers to the Undoing Racism Training. Joyce James, Deputy Commissioner for the Texas’ Department of Family and Protective Services shared a provocative story about the journey towards that shift in her state. Her story was reflective of the need to address the issue of race and racism across systems.
This Training is designed to provide language and analysis primarily about structural racism and how it manifests in our organizational and institutional policies and personal behaviors. Without this analysis and the language for defining what we are experiencing, our conversations will not transform our relationships or work to bring about a more equitable and just society. The key to this training is the organizing and development of staff, faculty and community in working together with a collective definition and understanding by which they can organize to be more effective in their work together. We are making a special appeal to decision makers to commit to participating yourself and sending at least two representatives from your organization to this training. It will prove to be a value added to the work your organization is already doing.
We actively seek multiracial and multi-ethnic participation.
