Is classical music “a white thing” that we wouldn’t understand? Most emphatically not, says classically trained cellist Elaine Mack, whose book “Black Classical Musicians in Philadelphia” demonstrates otherwise. Mack’s book is a compilation of 45 personal interviews with black, classically trained musicians who were born, bred, educated, and significantly contributed to the musical life of the city. In their own words, these artists speak of their family backgrounds, training, experiences, and opinions on the world of music and their place in it. Included are photos from private collections.
